Student Health Insurance
Insurance Options
The State College Area School District does not provide free accident insurance coverage for its student-athletes. Medical expenses incurred while participating in/on SCASD interscholastic sports teams or in/on SCASD intramural activities may be covered through the following options:
-
Private insurance plan
-
Voluntary SCASD Student Accident Insurance Plan (exception sport – football)
-
Pennsylvania’s Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
-
Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance Program (MAP)
It is not a PIAA nor SCASD requirement to have health insurance to participate in athletics. However, if your family does not carry health insurance for your child, any and all medical care that is provided will fall upon the individual family for coverage and not the SCASD.
Voluntary SCASD STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The portal is now open to enroll your student(s) for accident insurance for the 2022-23 school year. Coverage begins on August 23, 2022, which is the first day of school. Athletic Accident Coverage begins on August 10, 2022. Coverage will begin on these dates if Guarantee Trust Life (GTL) has received your premium payment. If the premium payment is received after these dates the coverage will begin on the day it is received and processed.
Please call or email Annette Winningham at 814-231-1021 or asw19@scasd.org with any questions.
NOTE: Payment DOES NOT come to SCASD but goes directly to GTL. The form with the application and details are below.

2. Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program, CHIP
CHIP covers uninsured kids and teens up to age 19. With more than 111,000 uninsured children in Pennsylvania, this is great news for families!
CHIP provides quality, comprehensive health insurance for routine doctor visits, prescriptions, dental, eye care, eyeglasses, mental health, and much more. CHIP covers uninsured kids who are not eligible for Medical Assistance. For most families, CHIP is free – for others, it is low cost. CHIP is pleased to partner with school districts in helping families find health insurance coverage for their children. Schools are a valuable partner in this effort. After all, healthy kids are better students.
